Held as part of the Open Studio program at the Fuchu Art Museum, this exhibition examined the tenth year of the virtual world “inner space,” which Harada has been constructing since 2008. While publicly presenting her process in the museum’s open studio, she produced and exhibited paintings and related works.
The project made visible, over time, the transformation of three-dimensionally constructed virtual landscapes within the computer into two-dimensional paintings. Dialogue with visitors and the conditions of on-site production were incorporated into the context of the work’s formation, with the act of making itself functioning as part of the exhibition. As suggested by the term “map,” the exhibition did not seek to fix fragments of the virtual world, but rather to indicate its evolving present position. Within the framework of the Open Studio program, it presented a layered structure in which virtual and physical spaces, production and reception, and inner and social realms intersected.

While rooted in digital technology, the project returned to painting as a material medium, and by
publicly revealing the circulation between these domains, sought to reconsider the conditions of artistic production and spectatorship in the twenty-first century.
