In 2011, Harada held a solo exhibition at Armas Gallery. Beginning with the virtual world “inner space” constructed within the computer, she selected landscapes by navigating through it and translated them into paintings. In the process of rendering digital environments onto canvas, material qualities such as brushwork and texture were introduced, creating an intersection between the virtual and the physical. The paintings functioned as “windows” opened onto the real world, inviting viewers into the virtual space.

We are pleased to announce that Almas Gallery will be hosting a special exhibition, "IKU HARADA SOLO EXHIBITION 2011," featuring the works of Iku Harada, from Saturday, June 18th to Saturday, July 2nd.

When Harada creates a painting, he first dives into an inner space he has built on his PC, takes walks, and, if necessary, adds to his house, finding his favorite scenery and bringing it back to the real world. He then faithfully fixes that scenery onto the canvas with acrylic paints, but adds brushstrokes and rough textures reminiscent of the exterior walls of a house that did not exist in the digital world of his inner space.

Harada's paintings, primarily large in scale, serve as windows into an inner space opening up to the real world, drawing viewers into vivid, warm, and uninhabited worlds. As you follow the faint presence of people lingering within, you find yourself drawn to a point of no return—a bottomless temptation that can be likened to the allure of the virtual world of digital/web.

Last year, I was incredibly active, starting with a solo exhibition at the Keiji Mashita Memorial Museum in Yamagata, and this new exhibition comes amidst that momentum. I hope you will come and see how inner spaces are transformed and depicted.
